Patient Story

Complementary Therapies

Music, massage, virtual reality, pet support, and legacy projects that bring comfort, connection, and dignity at no extra cost.

Hospice is not the last few days of life. It is time.

Once a patient is comfortable and the plan of care is in place, complementary therapies make room for the moments that medicine alone cannot reach. Music, gentle touch, immersive experiences, beloved pets, and legacy work can bring comfort, joy, and connection to patients and families across Martin, St. Lucie, and Okeechobee counties.

No skill or effort required

A patient does not need to be musical, mobile, or even awake to benefit. Therapists and volunteers meet each person exactly where they are.

Included at no extra cost

These programs are largely funded by the Treasure Coast Hospice Foundation and our community of donors, so they are available without out-of-pocket cost.

Built around the person

The care team learns what each patient loves - a song, a place, a pet, or a story worth saving - and brings the right therapy into the plan.

Five ways we bring comfort beyond medicine.

Complementary therapies are chosen for each patient based on what brings comfort and joy. Explore each one below.

Music Therapy

Board-certified music therapists use live bedside music, song, and life review to ease anxiety, lessen pain, spark memory, and reopen connection.

Massage & Aromatherapy

Gentle therapeutic touch and calming essential oils relieve tension, reduce anxiety, and bring physical comfort.

Virtual Reality Experiences

Immersive journeys let a patient swim with dolphins, walk the streets of a city they love, or simply return home.

Treasured Pets

Volunteers help with feeding, walking, and vet visits, and help ensure every pet finds a forever home after their owner passes.

Legacy Program

We help patients create messages, songs, heartbeat recordings, and memory projects that become a lasting comfort for loved ones.

An extended team of medical, emotional, and practical support.

Hospice is a team benefit. Physicians, nurses, aides, social workers, chaplains, counselors, and volunteers coordinate care around what matters most to the patient and family.

We really surround you. It's not disjointed like the rest of healthcare. It's cohesive, supportive, and genuinely loving.

Four levels of care

Donors fund it. Volunteers deliver it. Every patient receives it.

Medicare and insurance cover the clinical foundation of hospice care. They do not cover a virtual reality headset, a volunteer who walks a patient's dog, or the equipment to record a heartbeat. Those experiences exist because the Treasure Coast Hospice Foundation and our donors fund them, and because trained community volunteers deliver them. That is how we keep these programs available to every patient - not as a premium add-on, but as part of the care we believe everyone deserves.

01Foundation supported

Donor gifts make these comfort programs possible for every family we serve.

02Volunteer delivered

Trained community volunteers help bring music, pet support, and meaningful experiences to the bedside.

03Community based

Treasure Coast Hospice has cared for the community since 1982, and these programs reflect those local roots.

Family receiving hospice support

Families should feel surrounded, not sent home alone.

The family called us and said they wished they had called sooner. That's the one I hear the most. And every time I say: you still called. That's what matters.
